Frequently Asked Questions

Does the University have a campus where doctoral candidates can stay?

The University of Rijeka does have a campus, but most faculties are not situated on the campus (it takes approximately 15-30 minutes to reach them by public transport). The Rijeka Student Centre provides accommodation in two student dormitories – one is on the campus and the other is two kilometres away from our Faculty. As far as food is concerned, in our Faculty’s canteen lunch (a daily menu and other standard à la carte options) is available for the price of 25 HRK. Due to the limited capacity of the dormitories many students rent private apartments. The monthly rent varies from 300 Eur to 500 Eur, exclusive of the utility bills, depending on the size and the position of the apartment.

I would like to give lectures to students attending an undergraduate/graduate course of study in order to earn the ECTS credits needed within the structure of the doctoral programme, but I cannot speak Croatian.

No problem. We offer a complete undergraduate and graduate course in English, so you can participate in different classes.

Are there lectures every day and, if not, how many weekends should I spend at the Faculty?

We have reduced the number of subjects/classes of the doctoral programme (from 10 to 6) so now there are 3 in the first year and 3 in the second year. Half of them (one in the first year and 2 in the second year) are elective subjects. The number of weekends that you need to spend at the Faculty during the first year varies from 5 to 10. The subjects can be seen on:

Is the stay at a foreign university mandatory and how can the Faculty help me?

It is mandatory for full-time students, but it is more than desirable for others. The Faculty offers support and tangible help in organizing your stay within the Erasmus programme or a similar scheme (for ex. CEEPUS). In those cases, your stay is completely financed by the Erasmus/CEEPUS or another programme. During your stay you are supposed to attend some of the classes and work on your dissertation. You can find more information in paragraphs 16 and 22 of the Regulation.

Can you tell me now if my foreign degree makes me eligible for enrolling in your doctoral programme?

Yes, we can. Send us your degree via e-mail and our student services staff will check your eligibility (usually within a few days). The eligibility applies only to the enrolment in the doctoral programme of our University; it is not an official validation of your degree. All further administrative formalities regarding your degree can be postponed for later (after you enrol in the doctoral programme).

You require that we have a mentor as soon as we enrol. I do not know your professors. Can you help me with that? Can I choose someone from outside your Faculty or from another country who I already know?

Our call for applications comprises a list of current projects/topics and relevant mentors. Depending on the topic of your research, we can help you contact a relevant mentor from our teaching personnel or from another institution even before your enrolment. Mentors from foreign universities are more than desirable but they have to meet the requirements for mentors set out by our course of study (Article 13 of the Regulation). In that case you have to choose a co-mentor from our academic personnel.

Besides staying at another faculty, you also require participation in international conferences, workshops and publications in international indexed journals. Do you help students cover these expenses?

Doctoral candidates can apply for subsidies for participation in conferences, workshops and publication of papers in journals on a regular basis. They can also be financed from scientific projects conducted by their mentor or projects in which their mentor participates as a member of the research team. Find more details about it on:

I want to obtain my doctorate in accordance with the Scandinavian model. What will happen if I fail to publish the relevant papers in time?

That is not a problem because you can switch to the traditional form of dissertation (monograph) anytime.

I would like to have foreign professors (for ex. from the USA/Canada/Australia/Russia and similar remote countries) in my doctoral dissertation Committee – is that possible (given the travel expenses)?

We have organized defences like this in the past, that is not a problem. We will simply organize your defence as a video conference.
