3rd Croatian Health Economics Workshop

 8th-9th September 2025 – Split, Croatia

Now in its 3rd edition, the Croatian Health Economics Workshop encourages the exchange of ideas and best practice, with the aim to promote discussion of high-priority topics for the health systems of Central and Eastern European countries (including EU-member and non-member states). More generally, the workshop acts as a platform for transferring knowledge within Central and Eastern Europe and with the broader international community.

This year we are pleased to announce an Open call and a Themed call for abstracts. Submissions to both streams (Open and Themed) will be considered for inclusion in the overall CHEW programme.

OPEN CALL

CHEW welcomes submissions of paper using economic approaches to study the broad areas of health and health care, including but not limited to financial sustainability, long-term care and ageing, data linkage and outcomes measurement, healthcare workforce, health outcomes research and decision-making, effects of economic events on health outcomes, effects of health events on economic outcomes, and financial incentives. Papers accepted for the open call will be included in the main CHEW programme running from Monday 8th to lunchtime on Tuesday 9th September.

THEMED CALL – Cross-learning between Central and Eastern Europe and Latin America

Central and Eastern European countries (including EU-member states and non-member states) lag in terms of innovations in the ways their healthcare systems are organised and the issues that are tackled. Additionally, compared to Western Europe, the region still has a substantial gap in terms of economic growth, with various countries still in a middle-income status. This makes the fiscal constraints even more salient.

Despite different social, economic and industrial structures, these challenges are common to various countries in Latin America. For the 2025 edition, in collaboration with Prof. Daniel Maceira, and the "Strengthening Agency & Learning across Health Systems in the Americas” project funded by the Norwegian cooperation agency (Norhed), CHEW is pleased to announce a special focus on cross-learning between health systems in Latin America with those in Central and Eastern Europe. For this themed call, CHEW encourages authors to submit papers focusing on comparative analyses on health system organisation, performance, financing and quality in Latin America.

Postdoctoral researchers, Doctoral and Master students from Latin America across European Universities are encouraged to submit their papers for the session on this themed call. Papers accepted for the themed call will be included in a special session held in the afternoon of Tuesday 9th September.
